Floating Licence FAQ

Hi all,

Here’s a summary of common questions and answers with regards to our floating licences.

Can I combine Unlimited and Complete floating licences?

Yes, each licence must be hosted by its own licence server, such that the client such that Ragdoll inside of e.g. Maya can refer to it by IP and port, e.g. RAGDOLL_FLOATING=my.localdomain:8001

  • See here for details.

Can I host my floating licence in a virtual machine, such as Docker?

We use TurboFloat for licencing; it is what you run on your local machine to host licences for the end-users, your artist’s workstations.

For best reliability, they recommend you use a physical machine per instance of the floating licence server.

In practice however, we know this is not always feasible, so you are technically able to host it in a virtual machine. The thing to look out for is the server unexpectedly stopping on its own accord, when it (mistakenly) detects that something has changed at the hardware level of the machine.

Does a subscription require payment once per year?

We offer 2 payment methods.

  • Lifetime (also known as “Perpetual”)
  • Monthly Subscription

The lifetime licence is a one-off payment with 1 year of upgrades included. The monthly subscription is, as the name suggest, paid monthly and can be cancelled at any time.

The lifetime licence may optionally be renewed at the end of the first year, this is called the “Annual Upgrade Period” or “AUP” for short.

  • See here for details.

If not renewed, you keep your licence at the version up to the end of that year, such as Ragdoll Unlimited 2026.12.28 and you can choose to renew at any time, even after it has expired. Which adds 1 year onto your expiry, such as 2026 + 1 = 2027.

Does a lifetime license allows upgrades up to the next version?

Yes, every lifetime licence includes 1 year of upgrades.
