Ragdoll Simulation and Bake Results Are Inconsistent

Hello,

I am using Ragdoll in Maya. The physics simulation looks correct in the viewport, but after I record or bake the simulation, the resulting animation does not match what I saw during the simulation. The model’s motion and shape are different from the simulated result.

At first, I thought this issue might be caused by using the trial version. However, I have now upgraded to a paid license, and the problem still persists.

Could you please help me determine what might be causing this discrepancy and how I can fix it?

Thank you.

Hi @shen_lei, welcome to the forums!

Typically, differences between the simulation and recorded simulation is due to controls being unable to fully follow the simulation. Perhaps some channels are locked. Perhaps Markers were assigned to a control driven by another control. Or perhaps playback is happening in “Real Time” as opposed to “Play Every Frame, Max Real-time”

Quickest way to diagnose is to run Ragdoll → Utilities → Extract Simulation.

This will export the simulation onto a new set of Maya nodes you can use to manually constrain your controls to. You’ll then be able to see what makes following the simulation challenging. In the options for Extract Simulation, you can automatically constrain your controls to the simulation, this is what Record Simulation does too. Except once recorded, it would then automatically delete both the extracted simulation and constraints, keeping just the keyframes.

If you are able, it would also help a lot to post your results here. If you cannot post it, try and reproduce it in a new scene and post the steps so we can try to reproduce it on our end.

For example:

  1. Create cube
  2. Assign to cube
  3. ?
  4. Record
  5. Broken
