One Minute Pose Challenge

image.png

Hello World!

We’re launching the One Minute Pose Challenge. Prizes are given to those who can produce the most interesting pose in under 1 minute, featuring the complete screen-recording of their workflow.

Starts today, on the 10th September and runs until 24th October!

The Challenge

Create a video, up to 1 minute, showing your entire process of posing a character into a final pose using Ragdoll’s Pose Mode.

Judging will consider both the final result and how efficiently and creatively you arrived there.

Judging Method

The community will decide! Make your submission as a post on this forum and winners are the ones with the most Likes.

Once the competition comes to a close, we’ll start the clock and leave a week or so for everyone to cast their votes.

Judging Weight

We’ll ask each member to vote with these criteria in mind:

  • 40% for the final pose
  • 40% for the workflow video
  • 20% for creative use of the tools

Sample Submission

Here’s what a submission could look like, created by @emi

Commentary

For a pose, this one has a lot of things going for it; it’s clearly not a static pose one can hold, it emphasizes motion. The posture of the man is reasonable for the action being performed - supporting the weight of the juggle. The poses and position relative the hands of each child is reasonable - with each of their center of masses forming a clear arc.

For a process, Emily uses the natural lag of unselected limbs to her advantage and “flicks” the children into their correct crunched up pose. She intentionally has the children collide with the hands to create proper contact between them to emphasize their weight.

Overall, this is a top tier submission that would have been considered for a place on the podium!

Learning Material

At your disposal, you have Ragdoll and all it has to offer to make poses.

User Interface

The primary elements of the graphical user interface.

TAB for Asset Library

If you are on Ragdoll for Web, pressing TAB brings up available assets.

Double-click on an asset to load.

Rotate gizmo

Keep the hierarchy stiff as you drag any limb.

Hold SHIFT to “Freeze Parenthood” - as in, to prevent the immediate parent from moving at all.

Move gizmo

Especially useful to place a character in your scene.

And to place feet, preserving their orientation unless something opposes it, like the floor.

Hold SHIFT to “Freeze Parenthood” - as in, to prevent the torso from moving as you drag.

Pinch gizmo

Particularly useful to adjust hips and anything surrounded by body parts you’d like to keep as-is.

Also useful for making small adjustments to things like bendy limbs.

Ctrl + Click to mask selection

Use the Ctrl/Cmd key, or click the Mask gizmo, to prevent a limb from moving.

Sometimes, dragging has unintended consequences. Use the Mask gizmo to prevent a limb from moving.

Particularly useful for foot manipulation.

And close-up detail where careful manipulation is important.

Middle-click + Drag on timeline to control time

Middle-click drag on the timeline to “jog”. That is, play forwards or backwards, where the further you drag the faster you go.

Especially useful for relaxing a character onto the ground. Just the feet, or keep going.

The rules of masking still applies, which can open up for creative opportunities.

Gizmo Options

Find options for each gizmo by clicking a gizmo a second time.

Some notable options are:

Option Description
Relax Count Upon releasing the mouse, how many additional frames should Ragdoll simulate to relax intersections and limits?
Freeze Parenthood Whether or not the parent should move as you drag
Transfer on Release Whether to use the dragged pose with Smooth and Restore gizmos
Pressure How strong your drags are; lower this for more precision

Rule 4 - Start from neutral pose

Asset(s) must be in its loaded pose at the start of your recording. Moving into position is OK. :ok_hand:

Rule 5 - No cuts, must be real-time

Video must be unedited. Trimming start and end is OK. This is to keep a level playing ground.

Rule 6 - Native rendering only

Images must be coming straight out of Ragdoll. This is to prevent an unfavourable advantage to those able to produce nice-looking renders.

Assets

In the asset library, you’ll find 7 posable characters, 1 vehicle and 1 prop. Including the familiar Manikin, but with a twist. Literally.

Some assets are special.

  • The scholar have self-collisions disabled per default, letting limbs intersect and pass through each other as you pose.
  • The worker and creature both have fingers, making them suitable for detailed hand interactions.
  • The split is the same as manikin, except with split joints. Making it more expressive.
  • The jeep is articulated with rolling wheels, suspension and hinges on doors as you would expect.
